If you wish to get out on the water in England and Wales in a Canoe, Kayak, or Stand Up Paddleboard, chances are you will need a British Waterways licence. We are often asked in our Nottingham Kayak Shop by our customers if they need a UK boating licence, or canoeing and kayaking licence. Below we will answer some FAQs to help you decide if a British Waterways Licence is needed for your paddling.
Do I need a licence to paddle on a river?
The majority of rivers in England are navigable and require a waterways licence. Some rivers are classed as non-navigable and therefore do not need a licence. Normally these will be smaller rivers.
Do I Need a Licence to Paddle on the sea?
No, tidal waters do not require a licence. For paddling at the beach or in estuaries you’re good to go! Harbours may have their own launch fees so make sure to check.
Do I need a licence to paddle on a canal?
Most canals in England are managed by the Canal & River Trust, and you will need to purchase a licence. Other bodies might manage certain canals, such as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. These are managed by Essex Waterways. They require you to purchase a specific licence directly from them.
How can I check if I need a waterway licence?

Where can I buy a waterway licence?
There are a couple of different ways to get your licence. British Canoeing membership gives you a personal licence that covers all Environment Agency and Canal & River Trust managed waterways. As well as some other key destinations like the Norfolk Broads. There are also discounts for families, couples, and carers. Do I need to carry my waterways licence?
If stopped, you may need to prove you have a licence. You can do this through digital proof or with a membership card. You should always take a means of communication with you out on the water, so grab an Aquapac case to keep your phone dry and safe! Do I need a waterways licence in Nottingham?
If you’re looking to get out on the water around Nottingham you will need a licence. The River Trent and the surrounding Beeston Canal are both managed by the Canal & River Trust. British Canoeing membership will cover you for this or you can go directly to the Canal & River Trust.
If you’re looking to get out somewhere with great facilities, you can pay to use the Lagoon and facilities at Holme Pierrepont Country Park.
