We are celebrating six months of Flow Kayaks 1% for the Planet membership! 

Here at Flow Kayaks, our passion for getting out and exploring blue spaces goes hand in hand with our commitment to protecting them. That’s why, six months ago, we became an official member of 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses and individuals dedicated to supporting environmental solutions.  

This partnership is a reflection of our core values as a company, and of our Directors as members of the paddling community. From the very beginning, Flow Kayaks has been about meeting the needs of paddlers, not just getting you in the best kit out on the water. It’s also been about supporting our local communities, encouraging engagement with the outdoors, and inspiring respect for the water we enjoy. 

Six months ago, joining 1% for the Planet was a natural step forward for our commitment to the environment. Today, our membership remains at the forefront of our decision making day to day, ensuring we align with brands and companies who share our ethos.  

What is 1% for the Planet?  

A global organisation founded in 2002, 1% for the Planet encourages businesses to give back to the environment by donating at least 1% of their annual sales to environmental causes. The initiative connects member companies with vetted nonprofit organizations working on key environmental issues, from combating climate change to protecting wildlife and cleaning up waterways.  

The mission of 1% for the Planet is simple yet powerful: businesses profit from the resources the planet provides, so they should take an active role in giving back to sustain and protect those resources. Since its inception, the movement has directed over £535 million to environmental nonprofits worldwide, creating a ripple effect of positive change.  

How our partnered brands align

Flow Kayaks work with several likeminded brands, who share our ethos and who have made their own commitments to supporting the environment:

Level Six have introduced several sustainability initiatives in order to protect watersheds for future generations, including going PFAS free, ditching the forever chemicals which are toxic to the environment. They also are pioneering reduced consumption, offering repair and ensuring their products are designed to be long lasting. 

Astral are making strides towards a sustainable future by partnering with Bluesign in order to evaluate their supply chain and ensure no harmful chemicals are present in their products, while being uncompromising in quality. 

And last but by no means least, just up the road in the beautiful Peak District, Peak PS have adopted a ‘More Sustainable’ approach to their design and operations - a dedication to continued improvement in the way they do things. They make use of recycled yarns, and durable water repellent coatings which are entirely PFC-free. As with many of our other favourite brands, Peak PS understands the importance of durability, and working with partners up and down their supply chain to lessen their environmental impact through all processes from manufacture through to distribution.  

Taking Responsibility for a Shared Future  

We know that the health of our planet impacts everyone, and that access to blue spaces is vital for our own mental and physical health. Clean rivers, lakes, and oceans are essential not just for paddlers but for the well-being of ecosystems and communities worldwide. Through this partnership, we hope to amplify our impact and contribute to on-the-ground efforts to preserve the natural spaces we all love.  

But this is just the beginning. Becoming a member of 1% for the Planet isn’t just about financial contributions - it’s also about fostering a culture of environmental awareness and inspiring our customers and friends to take action. From choosing brands who utilise eco-friendly practices, to reducing waste and supporting conservation projects, we’re committed to integrating sustainability into everything we do.
